How to Observe and Respect the Sabbath Day
The Sabbath is the day of the rest, according to the Bible. It should be dedicated to God and kept holy. There is a debate over how best we can keep it holy, and dedicate it to God. The most sensible thing would be to worship Him and read from the Bible. If you are a believer in dedicating the Sabbath to God, then here are some of the things you can honour that day.
You need first to have a clear understanding of what it means to keep this day holy. The Bible teaches us that God took six days to create the world and then rested on the seventh day. That day marks the Sabbath day. As part of the Ten Commandments, humanity was ordered to remember the Sabbath day, and to keep it holy. Sabbath is derived from a Hebrew word that means rest. Holy refers to something sacred or meant for God. Sabbath, therefore, is a special day that is different from the others in a week. You need to avoid performing your normal duties and take time for God.
You should then keep Sabbath day holy by worshipping. After understanding the meaning in this day, it becomes easier for you to dedicate it for the purpose of worship. By worshipping God, you show the highest form of respect for the day, and for your creator. Most of our days consist of busy schedules and a hectic pace to keep up with our lives. We have commitments and responsibilities that leave us no time to rest and reflect. Buy on the Sabbath day; we need to remember where all we have comes from. You need to take time to be with God. Attending church is the best way to do so. It is therefore essential that you find a church that observes the Sabbath in your area. Apart from attending church, you need also to dedicate the rest of the day to reflect on the teachings of God, reading His word, singing songs of praise, and helping
those in need.
You also need to get ready for the Sabbath day in the course of the week. You need to plan your weekly activities with the Sabbath day in mind, where you make sure no activities spill over to that day. You can, for example, do your shopping early enough so that you do not need to run to the grocery store on the Sabbath for what you need that day or the next day. If you have to take work home, you need to finish it before the Sabbath day commences.
You also need to plan well how you will spend the rest of the Sabbath day dedicated to God. As much as you know what is needed, a lack of planning always results in time wasted, and the precious bond between you and God, as well as other people, is not fully utilized. You, therefore, need to know what you will do after church. You can, for example, plan a youth outreach afternoon, time with your relatives, a visit to a children’s’ home, and such activities. If you need permission or a budgetary allocation, you need to plan for it before the day arrives.
Sabbath is best spent in the presence of God, thanking Him for all you have, and dedicating the rest of your life to His ways. There is no better way to respect and observe the Sabbath day.
